In 2010 when I was learning how to create a blog, I spent a lot of time searching for helpful information online. I was only able to find it piece by piece on a variety of websites. Step 1. What is a blog, exactly?

A blog is a website (or a dedicated portion of your site) that displays frequent updates or articles from the blogger or business, almost like journal entries. These articles, which can be meant for entertainment, persuasive, educational, or sales purposes, are shown with the most recent content first.

Business blogs are almost always focused on highly authoritative, educational content that has underlying goals of expanding the business’ reach and driving specific actions, like engagement, subscribing to the business’s email, generating leads, or driving sales. 

There are five main points you need to know for creating a blog quickly. We will focus on how to start a blog on WordPress later, but for now, it’s important that you review these steps. If you are familiar with these details, you can get a blog online in 20 minutes or less.

Step 2. Find your blog niche

To start a blog and make it as a blogger, you have to select the right niche for your blog. 

  • First, make sure to pick a niche that you are the most interested in—the one you are passionate about.
  • Second, you need to make sure a niche has enough audience interest—topics people searching for.

When you’re planning the strategy and concept for your blog, it’s important to decide on a niche early in the process. As we mentioned above, niches are a subset of a broader topic or audience that allows you to more easily connect with your target audience and differentiate yourself from the other blogs in your industry. A strong niche will help enhance your brand and build your authority in your industry

Step 3. Choose a blogging platform 

Now it’s time to choose a web host.

What’s a web host? Your hosting company does all the technical magic to make sure your site actually appears when people type your domain name into their browser. In other words, it’s pretty important.

While we use MediaTemple to host The Write Life, it’s typically better for blogs with lots of traffic. You probably don’t need that if you’re just starting out, so go with a cheaper option instead.

There are multiple blogging platforms you can choose from when it comes to business blogging, which can include hosted blog solutions like Blogger.com, or self-hosted blog solutions like WordPress.org.

At this stage, you’ll need to look at the available blogging platforms out there and determine the type of blog management software that you are going to use.

Step 4. Choose a domain name

Your domain name will be the name by which you will be known online, no matter what niche you choose.It’s your blog’s unique address on the Internet. It will be yours as long as you continue paying the annual fee ($10 to $15 per year for a .com).

Users who know your domain (URL – uniform resource locator) can simply type it into their browser’s address bar. Others will be able to discover you through search engines such as Google and Bing, so you definitely need to find a unique blog name.

Choosing a domain name isn’t unlike choosing a brand name. It says a lot about your business, so it’s important to get it right. You can often purchase a domain name when you’re paying for a hosting service. 

First things first: choosing a domain name. Where are people going to find you online?

This can be one of the most enjoyable parts of getting started with a blog; it’s such a rush when the URL you want is available and you can buy it right away.

But if your first choice isn’t available, if someone else is already using that URL, it can be stressful to come up with another domain that feels right. After all, this is a permanent home on the Internet you’re creating!

The truth though, is that you can always change this down the line if you decide to go in a different direction with your URL. The most important part isn’t choosing the perfect domain, it’s choosing one and getting started.

Step 5. Buy a web hosting

When it comes down to choose a web hosting solution for your blog it’s easy to feel a little overwhelmed however, you have 3 main options to choose from-

After you’ve selected the blogging platform you want to use, the next step is selecting a web host for your blog.

“But isn’t that what a blogging platform is?” you may be asking. Technically, no. A web host is where the information that makes up your blog actually lives within servers. Think of it this way — if your blog is a house, the blogging platform is the architect that designs and builds your house. The web host is the land on which your house exists, and the domain name is the address where people can find your house.

Step 6. Pick up a blog theme and get it customized

Choosing a blog theme is pretty much straightforward in fact, you can choose between free and premium (paid) themes. No matter how you decide to proceed the blog theme you will choose, it will need to be customized.

Your blog’s design is essential, and it can matter just as much as the content itself. If the blog layout doesn’t look clean and professional, it can make your entire brand lose credibility.

Step 8. Write captivating blog posts

And now, finally, is the part that you’ve been waiting for since you first decided to launch the blog: writing the content itself

Content is king. Without informative, helpful, and authoritative content that’s well-written and provides valuable insights to the reader, your blog will go nowhere.

So far, you’ve established a domain name, chosen your blog hosting site, set up a blog theme, and you are ready to go. Your framework is complete. 

Now comes the moment of truth and you can actually start blogging. You need to learn how to write your first blog post. On the web, any useful information that you share with readers is called “content.” It must be something valuable that people will want to interact with and come back for more.

If you really want to start a blog, you’re going to need to…start writing.

We recommend creating an editorial calendar, even if you are coordinating with no one other than yourself. It doesn’t have to be fancy; it can even be scribbled out in a notebook.

What’s important is that you plan your posts in advance, so you can keep track of your ideas and stick to a schedule. It’s also a chance to assess and tweak your content strategy. What do you want to write about? How will you draw readers in?

Don’t forget you’re writing for the web, so your style should be different than if you were writing for print. Keep your tone conversational, use “you” phrases to speak to the reader and break up text with bullet points and sub-headers.

Images are important for grabbing attention and breaking up the text, so find a feature photo on Unsplash or Pexels to make each post shine.

Step 9. Get your blog SEO optimized

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the practice of optimizing your blog website to help search engines’ crawlers easily find and “understand” your content and index all of your blog pages. 

The vast majority of online traffic comes through search engines, so you want to ensure that your content is ranking as highly as possible. If not, you’re missing out on an enormous portion of potential clicks, which could have ideally been high-intent potential customers.

Step 10. Promote your blog

Once your blog is up and running, it’s easy to think that it’s all smooth sailing ahead. But blogs need consistent and ongoing promotional efforts.

Even if your blog content is fully SEO optimized, you can’t just sit back and wait for your audience to find you. It can take some time to build up SEO rankings and for your blog to draw consistent organic traffic, so be proactive about your blog promotion strategy.

Start promoting your blog and content

By now, you’ve learned how to create blog content and how to get it discovered by search engines. 

It is important to understand that you can write the most compelling copy in the world and design a blog interface that would sell people their own shoes. However, if no one sees it, all of your hard work is in vain. So, you need to know how to promote your blog.

You’re almost there! Now that you’ve started writing, it’s time to get readers. And I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but for many writers, this is the most surprisingly time-consuming aspect of blogging. Though it’d be nice if we could just write (that’s what we love to do, right?), it’s nicer to have people actually read your work.

You can try guest posting on other blogs, reposting on sites like Medium and LinkedIn, or including links when writing responses in forums, Facebook groups, or on Quora. Just make sure you’re adding value — and not spamming people with your URL.

In the end, creating a successful blog is about hard work and consistency. Keep posting helpful and engaging content, optimizing it for SEO and sharing it with your networks — and you’ll soon see your new blog start to blossom.
